There will be practice activities, and plenty of time for one-on-one coaching.
Please bring a camera that can shoot in manual mode, and if you are not familiar with where the settings are on your camera, please also bring the user's manual for your camera.
Holiday Street Photography Meetup
Saturday 09 December
Children's Museum of Virginia - 1pm - 2 Hours
Street photographers are observers by nature. They use photography as a way of connecting with the world and bringing back the moments that stand out. There are hints, feelings, ideas, stories, or questions in their photos that are meant to prompt the viewer to wonder about the rest of the story.
This two-hour meetup is for all skill levels and any camera type, including cell phones. We will be exploring Olde Town Portsmouth all dressed up for Christmas, looking for the interesting details in everyday life that are often overlooked. After a discussion on what Street Photography is and how to go about it, we will walk High Street. And what we find will be different for everyone, that's the beauty of Street Photography, pictures are taken from the photographer's viewpoint instead of focusing on the viewer's perspective, leaving every image up to the interpretation of the viewer rather than leading them to it.
Street Art Photography Meetup
Saturday 06 January
Virginia Beach - 1pm - 2 Hours
Street art is a unique and colorful art form and can be found in all kinds of nooks and crannies in cities all over the world. We're very lucky to have a dedicated space in Virginia Beach to attract and showcase exceptional street artists! Since 2015, the ViBe Creative District non-profit has worked with over 200 artists to host over 100 free and open to the public events generating over 350 works of art in the public domain.
During this two-hour meetup we'll walk the ViBe district and discuss how to capture the essence of this type of art. Do you back away and try to get the whole piece in one photo, or find the aspect that interests you most and get up close? Would a series of thirds make an interesting composition? Cars and people are bound to enter your view - include them? Wait for them to pass? Crop later? The difference between simply documenting an art piece and showcasing it depends entirely on your approach.

Architecture Photography Meetup
Saturday 27 April
Cape Charles, VA - 10am - 2 Hours
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city. We will learn ways to capture not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.
On the National Registry of Historic Places, Cape Charles is a quaint shore town with one of the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century buildings on the East Coast. The historic district features a range of architectural styles representing the period between 1880 and 1920. These styles include Queen Anne, Victorian Italianate, Gothic Revival, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow.
In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.
